Gerard was beatified in Rome on January 29, 1893, by Pope Leo . He was canonised, and became Saint Gerard Majella, less than twelve years later on December 11, 1904, by Pope Saint Pius X. Gerard Maiella or Majella was born in Muro Lucano, Italy on 6 April 1726, the youngest of five children. He was apparently frail from birth. His parents had him baptized the day he was born. His father was Domenico Maiella, a tailor who died when Gerard was twelve, leaving the family in poverty.
In obedience to God's will, Gerard went on a lot of mission trips, running retreats, helping young girls join convents, helping the poor, saving souls, and performing miracles. There is a well- known story in St. Gerard's life concerning one of the girls he helped get into a convent.
