The RCIA, which stands for Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is a process through which non-baptized men and women enter the Catholic Church. It includes several stages marked by study, prayer and rites at Mass.
While it is uncommon for a convert to enter the Church without going through the RCIA process, it is not entirely unheard of. In particular, if you are (or have been) a student at a Catholic school, then the pastor may be willing to work with you outside the normal process.
There are four stages within the RCIA process: The Period of Pre-Evangelization and Precatechumante. The Period of the Catechumante. The Period of Purification and Englightment. The Period of Mystagogy.
Adults who are interested in joining the Church follow a six-month course, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), culminating at the Easter Vigil Mass when they receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion, and are fully embraced as a member of the Catholic Church.
This depends on each person. Most people invest at least a year — it takes a long time to learn what it means to be Catholic, as well as to wrestle with questions and build relationships within the Church. But there is no set timetable and no rush. Some poeple take one year, others take three or even many more!
The time required to complete the journey may vary-- depending upon the background and circumstances of the individual. As each human is unique, each RCIA journey may be unique. Normally a person who is not baptized would participate in the RCIA process-for a minimum of one to two years from the time of beginning.
There is an introductory 9 week course in the Fall that includes a Day Away in November. In the late Fall and through the Spring, a 16 session course follows on the teachings of the Catholic Church. The 9 week introductory course includes dinner, a video presentation and good conversation.
The RCIA process goes year-round. We offer inquiry groups for newcomers three times a year - in the fall, in January, and after Easter. You can start at any of these times, and you proceed at your own pace through the RCIA process.
