To be named a Semifinalist, you'll need a Selection Index score of 219. What score do you need on each section of the PSAT to achieve this score? As you read above, your Selection Index equals the sum of your two section test scores (each on a scale of 160 and 760) multiplied by 2 and divided by 10.
The National Merit Scholarship Program provides this designation to the top 2-3% of PSAT takers nationally. The Commended Scholar cutoff for the class of 2025 is 208 (up one point from the 207 cutoff for the last two years). This is also a huge honor, and Commended scholars should be proud!
This means your PSAT score needed for National Merit should average about 36-37 on each section for your best chance of becoming a National Merit Scholar. This converts to a total PSAT/NMSQT score of about 1460 to 1520.
A perfect score on the PSAT is a 1520. If you're in 10th grade and you score between 1420 and 1520, you're in the top 1% of all test takers (99th percentile). If you're in 11th grade, anything between a 1490 and 1520 places you in the top 1%.
In order to be eligible for the National Merit Scholarship Program, a student must: 1) take the PSAT/NMSQT during his or her 3rd year (junior year) of high school 2) be enrolled as a high school student (traditional or homeschooled) and plan to enroll in college full time by the fall after his or her high school
Winning a National Merit Scholarship is a fairly difficult undertaking. Each year, the NMSC screens approximately 1.5 million qualifying entrants. Of those entrants, only about 16,000 students will be named Semifinalists based on their PSAT scores and other achievements.
It means you have scored in the top 1 percentile of test takers nationwide. So, you'll be breathing fairly rare air when you're in the program and your Merit Scholar status begins in earnest — and, if you reach the top, you'll be mingling with the titans of academia.
While a 1400 PSAT score is excellent and places you in the 97th percentile, whether or not you'll qualify for the National Merit depends on whether you rank within the top 99% scorers in your state. However, it's unlikely you'll qualify for the National Merit with this PSAT score.
