How to Fill Out a General Purpose Plasterboard:

01
Start by preparing the plasterboard surface. Use a drywall knife to scrape off any loose material or debris from the surface. Make sure the surface is clean and smooth before proceeding.
02
Mix the joint compound according to the manufacturer's instructions. Typically, you will add water and mix until you achieve a smooth, creamy consistency. Pour the joint compound into a clean bucket.
03
Take a drywall knife or trowel and scoop some joint compound onto the blade. Hold the knife at a 45-degree angle and apply the compound to the joints between the plasterboard sheets.
04
Work from one end of the plasterboard to the other, using long, even strokes to spread the joint compound evenly along the joint. Make sure to cover the entire joint with a thin layer of compound.
05
Once the joints are covered, embed paper joint tape over the compound. Press the tape into the compound using your drywall knife, making sure it adheres firmly to the plasterboard.
06
After embedding the tape, apply another layer of joint compound over the top of the tape. Use the drywall knife to smooth out the compound and remove any excess. Make sure the surface is level and free of any bumps or ridges.
07
Allow the first coat of joint compound to dry completely. This can take anywhere from 24 to 48 hours, depending on the conditions and type of joint compound used. Once dry, lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper to smooth out any imperfections.
08
Apply a second and third coat of joint compound, following the same process as before. Each coat should be applied with a wider blade or trowel to ensure a smooth transition between the plasterboard and the joint.
09
After applying the final coat, sand the surface once more to achieve a seamless finish. Wipe away any dust with a damp cloth before proceeding to paint or texture the plasterboard.
