Structure of a Lab report Title and Cover Page. Abstract. Table of Contents. Abbreviations. Introduction (includes the background or literature review) Methodology / Materials and Methods. Results. Discussion.
All columns in the tables and all axes on graphs should be clearly labeled, including units of measurement (cm, °C, etc.) All tables and figures should be given a number and should include a caption that explains what they are trying to convey.
The results section summarizes and presents the findings of the study to put them in context with your research question(s). The study's data should be presented in a logical sequence without bias or interpretation. Findings may be reported in written text, tables, graphs, and other illustrations.
The abstract is a short summary of the main ideas found in the lab report. Write this section LAST! It should include 1) the purpose of the study or the question being addressed by the study, 2) the procedures used in the study, 3) the major results of the study, and 4) any conclusions drawn by the author(s).
A good results section should… Describe summarized data and statistical results. Describe trends and patterns; highlight interesting and anomalous data; report significant findings. Include appropriate tables and figures, referred to and imbedded within the text.
In many labs, the report will not be graded on the success of the results, but on the students' interpretation of their results. Thus, students who do not get the desired results from an experiment, but make a thoughtful analysis of why or of what should have occurred, would not be penalized in their write-ups.
Present your observations in a raw, unprocessed form. Include measurements, quantities, and precise data points. For example, if you measured a temperature, record it as "25°C" rather than "warm."
