A noise assessment is a detailed measurement and monitoring of levels of sound (air pressure waves) in the area that is under assessment. The assessment will determine the frequency and amplitude of the sound in the air to provide the required information for a noise risk assessment.
A noise assessment does include the same noise levels measured in the basic noise survey, but also looks at: How long are people exposed to the noise in a day, and how often is that repeated. What combination of exposures do they get - is it from one machine or more likely from several, changing in the day.
With noise, OSHA's permissible exposure limit (PEL) is 90 dBA for all workers for an 8 hour day. The OSHA standard uses a 5 dBA exchange rate. This means that when the noise level is increased by 5 dBA, the amount of time a person can be exposed to a certain noise level to receive the same dose is cut in half.
Assess the risks (Reg 5) Identify noise hazards. Identify workers at particular risk from exposure to noise. Estimate likely exposure to noise. Identify measures required to eliminate or reduce risks. Make a record of action taken and planned.
A noise impact and sound insulation assessment should include the following information: existing background noise levels measured over a 24-hour period (including the cumulative noise levels of all existing units) proposed noise levels (including the cumulative noise levels of all proposed units)
A basic Noise Risk Assessment can be carried out in five simple steps: Step 1: Identify Potential Noise Sources. Step 2: Observe and Record Workplace Noise Levels. Step 3: Measure or Estimate Noise Levels. Step 4: Evaluate the Risk and Identify Control Measures. Step 5: Decide if a Full Noise Assessment is Required.
Noise Risk Assessment (NRA) is a critical process designed to evaluate and manage noise hazards in the workplace, ensuring compliance with occupational safety standards and protecting employees' hearing health.
