People apply to become Fellows in several ways including independently completing an application on our website, being nominated by an RSA Fellow, staff, or partner organisation. Everyone completes the same online form whether they have been nominated or not.
Each candidate for Fellowship or Foreign Membership must be nominated by two Fellows of the Royal Society, who sign a certificate of proposal. The certificate includes a statement of the principal grounds on which the proposal is being made and is available for inspection by other Fellows.
The Constitution requires that anyone nominated for Fellowship must have published or produced at least two substantial literary works or equivalent which are of 'outstanding literary merit', and must be resident in or citizens of the UK.
