Like its ancient Greek counterpart, Academic Decathlon is a ten event contest where high school students of all academic abilities and achievement work as a team to compete in the areas of language and literature, science, mathematics, social science, economics, art, music, essay, interview, and speech.
Academic Decathlon teams consist of nine student members, known as Decathletes. Each team consists of three Honors decathletes (GPA 3.9-4.0), three Scholastic decathletes (GPA 3.4-3.89), and three Varsity decathletes (GPA 0.0-3.39).
The decathlon is a combined ten-discipline track and field event held over two days. Athletes earn points for their performance in each event and the winner is the competitor that accumulates the most points across all disciplines. Decathlon competitors have to master a range of skills and techniques.
The 2025 USAD National Competition will be held in Des Moines, Iowa May 1-3.
Before you can compete in the Academic Decathlon, you need to have a team of 9 students, with three students who fall into each of the following categories: Honors (GPA of 3.80 or higher), Scholastic (GPA between 3.20 and 3.79), and Varsity (GPA of 3.20 or below).
Academic Decathlon is designed to include students from all achievement levels. Teams generally consist of nine members, who are divided into three divisions based on a custom calculated grade point average: Honors (3.8–4.00 GPA), Scholastic (3.20–3.79 GPA), and Varsity (0.00–3.19 GPA).
The Academic Decathlon stands out as one of the most intellectually rigorous extracurricular programs available to high school students. Its core strength lies in the breadth and depth of its curriculum, which challenges participants to engage with a wide range of academic subjects through a unified annual theme.
