If you or your parents were born in Ireland, or if you were adopted in Ireland, you may be an Irish citizen by birth. If you are not entitled to Irish citizenship by birth, you may be able to become an Irish citizen by registering your birth on the Foreign Births Register, or by applying for naturalisation.
Even so, the legislation as it stands is clear - that your citizenship won't be revoked as long as you file the form registering your intention to retain citizenship. That form won't need to be filed until year 7 of your stay outside Ireland. So if you followed these rules, you simply cannot lose your citizenship.
Irish citizenship by descent has a two-generation limit, meaning individuals born outside Ireland may qualify for Irish citizenship if one of their parents or grandparents was born in Ireland or a parent was an Irish citizen at the time of their birth.
— (1) Every person born in Ireland is an Irish citizen from birth. (2) Every person is an Irish citizen if his father or mother was an Irish citizen at the time of that person's birth or becomes an Irish citizen under subsection (1) or would be an Irish citizen under that subsection if alive at the passing of this Act.
