The checklist consists of six sections: Risk Assessment; Selection of Safety Practices; Biosafety Competencies; Safety Orientation and Training; Audits, Monitoring and Safety Committee; and Administrative Controls.
Biosafety Level 1 (BSL-1) Workers follow basic safety procedures, called standard microbial practices, and require no special equipment or design features. Standard engineering controls in BSL-1 laboratories include easily cleaned surfaces that are able to withstand the basic chemicals used in the laboratory.
Safety protocols for biosafety level 1 labs — which require only basic microbial practices — include: Mechanical pipetting (no mouth pipetting allowed) Safe sharps handling. Avoidance of splashes or aerosols. Daily decontamination of all work surfaces when work is complete. Regular handwashing.
No special practices or equipment are required but biohazardous sharps containers should be used for work with needles, scalpels or other sharps.
BSL-1 PPE to include lab coats, gloves and safety glasses. Lab coats are laundered regularly and if contaminated. No PPE is worn in the halls. Work surfaces are decontaminated once a day (following work) and after any spill of viable material.
Appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) is readily available and is worn when handling biohazards. BSL-1 PPE to include lab coats, gloves and safety glasses. Lab coats are laundered regularly and if contaminated.
BSL-1 labs also require immediate decontamination after spills. Infectious materials should also be decontaminated prior to disposal, generally through the use of an autoclave.
