Members of the BC Government and Service Employees Union have fought for decades for equality and equity in our workplaces As times have changed we've also had to actively challenge the status quo within our own unions structure in order to make room for diverse voices to step up In the early years there were very few women in leadership roles even though women comprised more than half the total membership Our unions first elected female executive officer Joan Power was forced to decline a nomination for President in 1955 due to sexist political pressure She later served as President for a brief period when the incumbent passed away Things started to shift in 1975 when our union held a provincial conference in celebration of the United Nations Decade for Women Members crafted proposals for new collective bargaining language to protect members from workplace bullying and harassment — two issues that disproportionately affected women and other equity groups Soon anti-harassment and anti-bullying contract language would become the gold standard for workplaces across the country In the 1990s our union achieved one of its earliest goals negotiating pay equity wage increases for 12000 members Other battles for equity were harder won — home support workers led what would become one of the longest strikes in BCG EU history before they secured wage parity with their colleagues in long-term care facilities As the union began to organize in sectors and worksites with more Indigenous Workers and Workers of Color these members began to meet informally to discuss and organize around issues specifically affecting them At Bogus 1993 Convention members from equity groups pushed the unions leadership to establish stronger supports for our increasingly diverse membership Soon after delegates voted to establish the Equity and Human Rights Committee which today represents Indigenous Workers of Color Workers with Disabilities and LGBTQI2S Workers The Committee provides policy recommendations to the provincial executive which brings an equity lens to bargaining proposals member education coalition work and a range of events and activities A diverse and inclusive union helps us understand each other's intersecting struggles and grow our solidarity We still have a long way to go, but each step forward makes us stronger
