Overview. Since 1969, the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) has successfully addressed critical societal concerns by employing paraprofessional staff and influencing nutrition and physical activity behaviors of low-income families, particularly those with young children.
As a core Community Nutrition and Health statewide program, the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) provides community education classes which promote nutrition and physical activity for income-eligible youth and adults as a means of maintaining a healthy lifestyle free from chronic disease.
Examples of nutrition education activities include: presentations, cooking classes, food preparation demonstrations, field trips, plays, panel discussions, planning and/or evaluating menus, food tasting sessions, question and answer sessions, gardening, physical fitness programs, videos, etc.
The primary audiences for EFNEP are limited resource: Pregnant women. Families with young children (under the age of 19) living in either rural or urban areas who are responsible for the planning, purchasing and preparing of the family's food. Pregnant and Parenting Teens.
EFNEP combines hands-on learning, applied science, and program data to ensure program effectiveness, efficiency, and accountability. Routinely, 80 percent or more EFNEP families report living at or below 100 percent of poverty, and nearly 70 percent indicate being of minority status.
PROGRAM CHARACTERISTICS EFNEP funds are allocated to eligible land-grant universities in all states, U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia to have peer educators (paraprofessionals) teach program participants how to improve their nutritional health and well-being.
