Illustration

How to initiate an intravenous infusion:

01
Gather all necessary supplies: You will need an IV catheter, sterile gloves, a tourniquet, alcohol swabs, and an IV bag with the prescribed medication or fluids.
02
Prepare the patient: Explain the procedure to the patient and ensure their consent. Select an appropriate vein, typically in the forearm or hand, and clean the area with an alcohol swab.
03
Put on sterile gloves: This step is important to prevent infection. Make sure your hands are clean and dry before putting on the sterile gloves.
04
Apply a tourniquet: Place the tourniquet 3-4 inches above the site where you plan to insert the IV catheter. This will help engorge the veins and make them easier to locate.
05
Locate the vein: Use your fingers or a vein finder device to locate a suitable vein. Look for a vein that is straight and easy to access. Once found, release the tourniquet.
06
Clean the site: Use an alcohol swab to clean the selected site in a circular motion, starting from the center and working outward. Let the area air dry or use a sterile gauze.
07
Insert the IV catheter: Hold the catheter by the hub, at a 15-30 degree angle, bevel side up. Swiftly insert the catheter into the vein. Once blood return is observed, advance the catheter a little further and secure it in place.
08
Connect the IV tubing: Attach the IV tubing to the catheter hub and ensure it is tightly connected. Make sure to remove the protective cap from the end of the tubing.
09
Start the flow: Open the clamp on the IV tubing to start the flow of fluids or medication. Ensure that the flow rate is set to the prescribed rate.
10
Monitor the patient: Stay with the patient and observe for any signs of complications, such as pain, swelling, or infiltration.
11
Dispose of the materials: Safely dispose of any used materials, such as gloves, sharp items, and alcohol swabs, in the appropriate waste containers.
