Hello everyone thanks you for joining me for this August PE BTF webinar entitled sources of energy carbohydrates fats and proteins my name is Jim moisture and'll be your presenter for those of you don't know me I'm a registered dietitian'm also a licensed dietitian nutritionist in the state of Pennsylvania, and I'm also a certified personal trainer which is through national Academy of Sports Medicine I'also a two-time University of Maryland graduate and I worked in various hospitals clinics and fitness centers helping people achieve a variety of health and wellness goals our webinar today will be approximately 30 minutes long your phone lines are muted, but you're welcome to ask questions via the webinars chat function if I don't get to your specific question on the webinar today during the call I will respond to you later today personally via email also if you are listening in to the webinar in a group setting I would appreciate you emailing me the headcount of the number of people you listening for attendance purposes so do you read Nutrition Facts labels if so what do you look for today on our webinar we're going to discuss the major components and nutrients in food and on the label including carbs fats and proteins these three nutrients together are called the macronutrients so our learning objectives for the webinar today are to review the sources of energy learn the importance of these sources of energies for our health also explain the importance of monitoring the sources of energy and finally we'redoing to understand how to read nutrition labels, so food provides us with the energy we need to live carbs fats protein are the three main nutrients in food and these three nutrients are called the macronutrientsbecause they're needed in large amounts mackerel equals large they help us provide our bodies with energy orcaloriesthat we need for growth metabolism another body functions all food or all nutrients are not equaling calories fat for example has more than twice the calories grant program as equal amount of carbohydrate and protein so if you think about a gram of carbohydrate or gram of protein both of those either of those are going to contain four calories per gram and then a gram of fat is going to contain nine calories so let's begin with carbohydrate there is a lot of misinformation circulating right now about carbs do the many low-carb plans as become popular so let's dig into the facts first what are carbohydrates and what is their importance in the body carbohydrates are the body's main energy source and there are two main types of carbohydrates simple and complex simple carbohydrates are found in things like fruits vegetables milk products as Wells sweeteners like honey sugar there've also foods like candy and soft drink sand then there's complex carbohydrates they're found in whole grain breads whole grade materials whole grain pasta whole grain rice beans peas and also starchy vegetables like potatoes green peas and corn many...
