How to fill out work opportunity tax credit

01
To fill out the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC), follow these steps:
02
Determine if you are eligible for the WOTC. Check if your business meets the criteria and if the employee you are hiring belongs to any target groups defined by the program.
03
Obtain the necessary forms. You will need the IRS Form 8850, a Pre-Screening Notice and Certification Request for the Work Opportunity Credit. You will also need ETA Form 9061 or ETA Form 9062, the Individual Characteristics Form or the Conditional Certification Form.
04
Complete the IRS Form 8850. Fill in the relevant information about your business and the prospective employee you want to hire. Make sure to provide details about the target group the employee belongs to.
05
Complete the ETA Form 9061 or ETA Form 9062. This form collects information about the individual's characteristics or provides a conditional certification, depending on which form you are using.
06
Submit the completed forms. Send the IRS Form 8850 to your state workforce agency no later than the 28th calendar day after the employee starts working. Submit the ETA Form 9061 or ETA Form 9062 to the state workforce agency as well.
07
Wait for certification. The state workforce agency will review the forms and determine if the employee is eligible for the WOTC. You will be notified of the certification decision.
08
Claim the credit. If the employee is certified as eligible, you can claim the WOTC on your business tax return using Form 5884. Follow the instructions provided by the IRS to calculate the credit amount.
09
Keep records. Maintain all relevant records and documentation related to the WOTC for future reference and potential audits.
