Professors are tenure-track or tenured faculty. In the United States there are three ranks of professor: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Full Professor.
Unless they are applying for early promotion, it is expected that faculty members will complete at least 5 years in rank (as Associate Professors) before applying for promotion to Professor. It is critical that faculty be “ready” (i.e., clearly meeting promotion standards) when they apply.
Expectation is at least 10 publications and/or scholarly products; a minimum of 6 of these must be peer-reviewed publications in journals.
Academic titles, or ranks, either modified or unmodified, include: instructor, assistant professor, associate professor and professor.
Full professor: This is the highest rank for a professor. Full professors are faculty who have demonstrated sustained excellence in their teaching effectiveness, scholarly/creative output, and service to the college. An associate professor may seek further professional review in a bid to become a full professor.
He then gets promotions every 3 to 5 years to "Associate Professor", then as "Additional Professor" and finally becomes a "Professor". Usually, a professor (or in the absence of a Professor, an Additional Professor) is the Head of the Department.
