The OFA classifies hips into seven different categories: Excellent, Good, Fair (all within Normal limits), Borderline, and then Mild, Moderate, or Severe (the last three considered Dysplastic).
In short, no. The underlying problem in elbow dysplasia is abnormal development of the joint, and it is not possible to reverse the process and make the joint normal. All dogs with elbow dysplasia will develop arthritis to some degree even if they undergo surgery.
While elbow dysplasia cannot be cured, it can be well-managed. With surgery and the appropriate medical management, many dogs have a good long-term prognosis.
The OFA performs hip and elbow preliminary evaluations on dogs that were under 24 months of age at the time of radiograph. For certification purposes, the animal must be at least 24 months of age to be eligible.
There are several theories as to what can cause this disease – such as genetics, defects in cartilage growth, trauma, diet and exercise. Any of these causes leads to a mismatch of growth in the two bones that make up the fore leg (radius and ulna) that are between the elbow and the wrist.
The hip score is made up of the total number of points given for different features in the hip joint, it is representative of the severity of the condition. The lower the score the better. The minimum score for each hip is 0 and the maximum is 53, giving a range for the total score of 0 to 106.
Elbow dysplasia scoring0Normal elbow joint1Mild arthrosis2Moderate arthrosis or suspect primary lesion3Severe arthrosis or evident primary lesion
The score for each hip gives an indication of how severe the dysplasia is (so, for example, a hip scoring 0-3 is usually considered normal and healthy).
Grade 1 – These dogs have been found to have some slight changes in their elbows and are at a higher risk of producing puppies affected by elbow dysplasia. These dogs may be used for breeding only after careful consideration (see below)
Each elbow is then scored 0 (normal) to 3 (significant primary lesion and/or very severe arthritis).
