File Form I-765 up to 90 days before, but no later than 60 days after, your program end date. You must file your Form I-765 within 30 days of the date that your DSO enters the recommendation for OPT into your SEVIS record.
Every 6 months from the start of STEM OPT, you are required to submit a validation report. You can expect a validation report reminder from SEVP via email 30 days prior to the report due date. Not submitting a validation report is a violation and may jeopardize the student's nonimmigrant status.
Incomplete or Incorrect Materials: Missing or outdated forms, improperly filled-out I-765, or invalid payment methods. Exceeding Full-Time CPT Limit: Using over 12 months of full-time CPT disqualifies students from OPT eligibility.
STEM OPT students must report the termination of their practical training experience within 10 days of the event. Students who are granted a 24-month STEM OPT extension are allowed an additional 60 days of unemployment beyond the initial post-completion OPT limit.
If you miss the 10 day reporting deadline, employment updates must still be reported although the SEVP Portal will not allow OPT students to report employment that began more than 10 days in the past. As such, you will need an OIS advisor's assistance to submit your employment information for you.
F-1 students on APPROVED POST OPT are required to report their employment information and any changes in their personal information, employment information, and employment relation to the major area of study on both SEVP Portal and the IESC Online Report Form within 10 days from the day of the change(s).
After a student receives the OPT I-20 from OIS, they must file Form I-765 online via myUSCIS–the student must create an account with USCIS if they do not have one. Once the myUSCIS account has been created, the student can complete the Form I-765 online.
Report material changes of the STEM OPT student's employment by submitting a modified Form I-983 to the DSO at the earliest available opportunity. Report the STEM OPT student's termination of employment or departure to the DSO within 5 business days.
