How to fill out individual composting unit

01
Start by selecting a suitable location for the individual composting unit. It should be a well-drained area away from direct sunlight.
02
Place a layer of twigs or coarse materials at the bottom of the composting unit to allow for airflow.
03
Add a layer of organic waste such as kitchen scraps, yard trimmings, and leaves. Aim for a ratio of 3 parts brown materials (carbon-rich) to 1 part green materials (nitrogen-rich).
04
Moisten the compost pile to ensure it has the right moisture content, similar to a damp sponge.
05
Turn the compost pile regularly, every 1-2 weeks, to aerate it and speed up decomposition. This can be done using a pitchfork or compost turning tool.
06
Monitor the temperature and moisture levels of the compost pile. The ideal temperature range is between 110°F and 160°F (43°C to 71°C), and the moisture level should be around 50-60%.
07
After a few months, the composting materials will break down into dark, crumbly, and earthy-smelling compost. It's now ready to be used as a nutrient-rich soil amendment in your garden.
