Interpreters. Joining us this morning is Debt Tulane Silva Program Director of the Office on Equality and Access to the Courts, Hawaii State Judiciary The Hawaii State Judiciary is seeking individuals who speak English and another language to become court interpreters. Court interpreters play an essential role in the administration of justice. Interpreters facilitate communication between the English- speaking individuals and individuals who are unable to hear, understand, speak or use English sufficiently to effectively participate in court matters. Interpreters help such persons have equal access to justice and help court proceedings function efficiently and effectively. Applications are now being accepted for the next state court interpreter orientation workshop to be held on each of the major islands in February and March. Completion of the two-day workshop is one of the mandatory requirements to become a court interpreter for the Hawaii State Judiciary. The two-day orientation workshop will be held on: Maui: February 19 – 20, 2015 Kong: March 3 – 4, 2015 Kauai: March 10 – 11, 2015 Oahu: March 14 – 15, 2015 Hilo: March 19 – 20, 2015 The registration deadline is extended to 4 p.m., February 13, 2015. The workshop registration fee is $120 and includes a resource binder. Certified sign language interpreters are also encouraged to apply. Individuals who are interested in interpreting for the state courts must complete the Judiciary's Court Interpreter Certification Program Application Form to the Office on Equality and Access to the Courts. The Application Form may also be obtained from the BEAC. Applicants must: be at least 18 years of age; be authorized to work in the United States; and speak English and another language. In addition to successfully completing the orientation workshop, persons seeking to become a state court interpreter must pass a written English proficiency exam and court interpreter ethics exam and clear a criminal background check. Court interpreters work on a freelance basis as independent contractors in cases when parties or witnesses are unable to hear, understand, speak or use English sufficiently. Depending on their performance on written and oral exams, court interpreters are paid between $25 to $55 per hour with a two- hour minimum.
