Greyhounds are prone to separation anxiety since they have lived their whole lives with people and other greys. Often being left home alone as a pet is their first time being alone ever. That being said they adapt well and can learn to be alone for hours at a time.
Can Greyhounds Be Left Alone ALL DAY? I would highly recommend not going beyond 8 hours purely because of bathroom breaks. You do not want to come home to accidents so make sure you do not leave your Greyhounds alone too long. We tend to confine our Greys to one large room like a family or living room.
We were aware that greyhounds can be prone to separation anxiety so from day 1 we followed the usual advice. Despite our best efforts, it was soon clear that Flo had separation anxiety. We struggled to find someone who was able to help us but the situation quickly became very stressful for the whole family.
Greyhounds Pros and Cons ProsCons Gentle and affectionate May develop separation anxiety Require moderate exercise Strong prey drive can make cohabitation with small pets challenging Low barking tendency Prone to specific health issues Social nature Not suitable for high-energy activities
Greyhounds generally are low maintenance dogs; as adults they tend to have medium energy needs, easy care coats, and can be a healthy and long lived breed with the right genetic selection and responsible approach to pedigree.
For Adult dogs, Yes, it is generally, alright to leave your dogs for 8 - 9 hours, alone. Even in a Crate (dog kennel), 8 - 9 hours is usually alright. But for dogs under 2 years old, I would not advise leaving them in a crate longer than 6 hours if possible, or be prepared to clean the crate and bath a dog.
If a greyhound is barking when they're alone, it could be one of two reasons. One: anxiety. Your dog is distressed that they don't have you around, and barking helps to alleviate that distress and also communicate that to their social peers, which, in this case, is you. Two: boredom.
