This is the color of water by James McBride the story begins by the mother talking of how she was removed from her family and that she is dead to them throughout the story the perspective switches between James McBride and his mother Ruth during James's chapters in the book he tells of his major life events beginning when he was a child his mother never had excess funds, but their family still managed to have all that they required he was a very studious and respectful young man until a stepfather passed away, and he began to distance himself from his family he eventually came back home and tried to reconnect himself with his family at school he always loved his mother, but he was curious as to why she was so secretive about her past during his adult life he chose to investigate his mother's past and find out whom he really was and where his family came from Ruth speaks about her past using flashbacks as well as directly speaking to his son when he is an adult she was raised in a strictly Jewish home by her father a rabbi and her faithful mother her father hated African Americans, and she had no original intent of being rebellious when she fell for a black man she apparently left home for New York City when she was 18 and later married a black man named Andrew McBride who converted her to Christianity they had eight but biracial children together before he passed away at a fairly young age there she married another black man hunter Jordan and had four more children with him, he also passed away before he had grown old she continued to scrape by on money, but she managed to send her children to secondary and post secondary school all of her children grew to be very successful independent individuals without a mother who was clinging to them after she lost both of her husband's to school I was very nervous no
