The following are seven things I remember as a 7-year-old reading the first chapter of “Harry Potter”. . . I knew everything that was going to happen in this story. I looked at each line in the book, as if it were before me. Furthermore, I knew what would happen when it was announced that Harry Potter was going to be going to Hogwarts. Furthermore, I knew what was going to happen when Professor Quarrel came down the stairs and said, “Mr. Potter. What will you choose today?” I looked up at the teacher. He was telling Mr. Weasley, Mr. Weasley's brother, that Mr. Weasley would have to select a house. I knew when the letter was announced that the letter would come from the Dursley. It did, and I knew exactly where Harry was going. I understood that the Dursley would be leaving, but I did not know exactly where they were going or how they would get there. To me, it did not seem relevant whether the Dursley left by boat, as my brother and I did that summer, or by train. (I did not know Harry would be going to Hogwarts.) I went with the flow of what I knew. And when I didn't know a particular thing, I would ask a person who was going to do it, as I often did, for example, “Will we go to America?” “Who is your neighbor?” “How are you going to get to the beach?” I did not know why I had chosen to read this book. I did not remember seeing anyone else reading it either. The following are seven things I am grateful for finding out early as I read “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone”. . . I know now that Mr. Dursley had just been through a divorce and was a very private man and was very secretive about that. I do not know if this is because he could not afford to have his neighbors come to look at his house after the divorce and to take photographs. The Dursley did not tell Mr. Weasley's aunt and uncle until after the family was staying at a hotel in Greece, and then only in a very vague way. I know now that the Dursley hated their aunt and uncle. They also hated the Muggles. But their hatred of the Muggles seemed almost more real than their hatred of the wizarding-community.
