Lexicogrammar (or lexico-grammar) is a level of linguistic structure where lexis, or vocabulary, and grammar, or syntax, combine into one. At this level, words and grammatical structures are not seen as independent, but rather mutually dependent, with one level interfacing with the other.
Put simply, syntax refers to grammar, while semantics refers to meaning. Syntax is the set of rules needed to ensure a sentence is grammatically correct; semantics is how one's lexicon, grammatical structure, tone, and other elements of a sentence coalesce to communicate its meaning.
Lexicogrammar: The lexicogrammatical dimension of language deals with (preferred) co-occur- rences between words and their grammatical environments, or between grammatical structures and their lexical environments (cf. Biber, Conrad, & Reppen, 1998, p. 84).
Lexicogrammar derives from the idea that "vocabulary and grammatical structures are interdependent," and therefore the grammatical structures of lexis is what the systemic functional linguistics approach analyzes. Lexicogrammar does not equally pay attention to lexis as it does to grammar.
For example, lexical verbs have valency patterns: some verbs can be used with a direct object (I made some oven gloves), or with both a direct object and an indirect object (The government awarded them a pay rise), others need no object at all (The Colonel was laughing)," (Pearce 2007).
The lexical approach is a way of analysing and teaching language based on the idea that it is made up of lexical units rather than grammatical structures. The units are words, chunks formed by collocations, and fixed phrases.
The lexicogrammar approach assumes instead that even the most mechanical or abstract grammatical process depends on lexical relationships and has a lexical realisation (e.g., the grammatical mechanism of 'raising' depends on cognitive, reporting verbs as in the pattern N has been {found, shown, thought} to V.)
Simply put, lexicogrammar is the grammar of the lexicon. Lexicogrammar derives from the idea that "vocabulary and grammatical structures are interdependent," and therefore the grammatical structures of lexis is what the systemic functional linguistics approach analyzes.
