Does CPT require visa sponsorship? CPT is not a separate visa category and does not require “sponsorship” from an employer. However, the student must have a practical training offer from the employer before they can apply for CPT authorization.
Full-time CPT: Internship hours are more than 20 hours per week. Full-time CPT is available only during the summer. Please check with your Internship Coordinator if other rules apply. If you accumulate 12 months of full-time CPT you will not be eligible to apply for post-completion Optional Practical Training (OPT).
The CPT program qualifications are as follows: Students must have completed at least one full academic year of school. Students must have a valid job or internship offer. Job must be related to the student's field of study.
Students must maintain full-time enrollment during fall and winter CPT. Full-time enrollment is 12 credit hours for undergraduate students, 8 credit hours for graduate students and 6 credit hours for Graduate Student Instructors and Graduate Student Research Assistants.
Eligibility for CPT Be in valid F-1 immigration status for at least two full-time semesters (1 academic year) before becoming eligible for CPT. Enroll for Internship/Field Study/Practicum Course Credit OR be completing a Degree Requirement.
CPT is integral to your major and the experience must be part of your program of study. When you enroll at the graduate level, your designated school official (DSO) may authorize CPT during your first semester if your program requires this type of experience.
