We have seen the rise of a new, much stronger, and a lot more vocal form of feminism in Islam. But have we seen a renewed commitment to political action among the Muslim community? It is a way of punishing women who have offended the parents, relatives, or community in some way, usually because of infidelity or some other violation of male family norms. In Pakistan, there is a tradition of honor killing for women who have had sexual relationships outside marriage and committed adultery with someone outside their social circle. While there are other ways of preventing this cultural practice, the Qur'an states that women have an obligation to comply with their husbands' sexual demands and in this case, the husband is the only person entitled to decide when a woman have fulfilled this obligation. The concept of honor killing itself may be a new development and is at odds with the Qur'an.
