Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a period during which undergraduate and graduate students with F-1 status who have completed or have been pursuing their degrees for more than 9 months are permitted by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to work for one year on a student visa to acquire practical training to complement their field of study.
Students who have completed a degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) fields and want to work in the U.S. for an additional 24 months under the STEM OPT extension are required to file for STEM OPT.
To apply for STEM OPT, students must work with their designated school official (DSO) to complete Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, and Form I-983, Training Plan for STEM OPT Students. Additionally, they must meet all the eligibility requirements and submit the required documents.
The purpose of STEM OPT is to provide students with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in their field of study and enhance their skills while maintaining their legal status in the U.S.
Students on STEM OPT are required to report any changes in their employment status or address, as well as submit an annual self-evaluation and a final evaluation of their training experience to their DSO.
