01
Gather all the necessary equipment, including gloves, alcohol swabs, tourniquet, syringe or vacutainer, needle, and specimen containers.
02
Identify the patient and explain the procedure to them, ensuring their consent.
03
Prepare yourself by washing your hands and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
04
Position the patient comfortably, ensuring easy access to their desired arm.
05
Apply a tourniquet to the patient's upper arm, approximately 3-4 inches above the desired venipuncture site.
06
Ask the patient to make a fist or pump their hand several times to promote venous distention.
07
Cleanse the intended venipuncture site with an alcohol swab in a circular motion, allowing it to dry.
08
Put on gloves, and if using a syringe, attach the needle securely. If using a vacutainer, ensure the appropriate needle is attached to the holder.
09
Anchor the vein by gently pulling the skin taut below the intended puncture site.
10
Insert the needle bevel-up at a 15-30 degree angle, with a smooth and confident motion.
11
If using a syringe, slowly pull back on the plunger to collect blood. If using a vacutainer, carefully insert the collection tube into the vacutainer holder and blood will be drawn automatically.
12
Once the required volume of blood is obtained, release the tourniquet and remove the needle quickly and smoothly.
13
Apply gentle pressure to the puncture site with a gauze pad or cotton ball using your gloved hand, and then secure it with a bandage.
14
Label the specimen container with the patient's information, including name, date, and time of collection.
15
