STEM Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a program that allows international students with a degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) field to work in the United States for an additional 24 months after the initial 12-month OPT period.
Students in F-1 visa status who have completed a degree in a STEM field from a U.S. institution and wish to extend their OPT for an additional 24 months are required to file for STEM OPT.
Students must fill out Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, and specify STEM OPT in the application. They also need to provide supporting documentation such as proof of STEM degree, employer information, and the Form I-20 with the STEM OPT recommendation from their designated school official (DSO).
The purpose of STEM Optional Practical Training is to provide international students in STEM fields the opportunity to gain practical experience in their area of study, enhancing their employability and providing valuable contributions to the U.S. economy.
Students must report information such as any changes in their employment status, employer information, address changes, and any other significant updates to their DSO and the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
