How to fill out beginning kumihimo

Illustration

How to fill out beginning kumihimo:

01
Start by setting up your kumihimo disk or plate on a flat surface. Make sure it is secured and won't move while you work.
02
Cut eight strands of your chosen cord or thread, each measuring around 18-24 inches long. These will be the strands you will be weaving to create the kumihimo design.
03
Take one end of each strand and tie them together in a tight knot. This will serve as the starting point for your kumihimo braid.
04
Arrange the strands on the kumihimo disk or plate, placing each strand into one of the slots or notches on the disk. Make sure they are evenly spaced out around the disk.
05
Take the strand in the first slot on the left side and move it to the right slot directly across from it. Repeat this with the strand in the second slot, moving it across to the second slot on the right side.
06
Continue this pattern, always moving the strand from the left slot to the right slot directly across from it. You will notice that as you do this, the strands will form an "X" shape in the center of the disk.
07
After completing a full rotation around the disk and returning to the starting point, gently tug on the strands to tighten the braid.
08
Continue to repeat steps 5-7, always moving the strands in the same direction, until you reach the desired length for your kumihimo braid.
