As a member of the cardiovascular surgical team, the perfusionist also known as the clinical perfusionist helps maintain blood flow to the body's tissues as well as regulate levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood, using a heart–lung machine.
Although perfusion school entrance requirements may vary, eligible candidates usually have one or more of the following: Bachelor of Science degree. Experience as a registered nurse (RN) or respiratory therapist (RRT) or other healthcare practitioner.
As a high-demand medical profession, cardiovascular perfusionists can opt to specialize in specific procedures or populations. Some may choose to work in pediatric cardiothoracic surgical units or medical centers specializing in heart, lung, or liver transplants. Additional training for subspecialties is required.
To become a perfusionist, it will typically take you a minimum of four to six years. The amount of time it takes to become a perfusionist varies depending on the type of educational program you enroll in. Perfusionist programs are offered at the certificate, bachelor's and master's degree level.
Higher education requirements To work as a cardiovascular perfusionist, a strong background in biology, anatomy, mathematics, and other sciences is recommended. After a high school education, most go on to acquire an advanced degree, attend cardiovascular perfusionist school, and obtain certification.
The n + 1 staffing model, as defined by Guideline 15.1 in the AmSECT Standards and Guidelines for Perfusion Practice, establishes the minimum safe number of perfusion staff required to support operating rooms at any one given time per surgical center [7].
Perfusionists primarily support people during open heart surgery or when ECMO is necessary. They are not doctors, so they do not work alone or make treatment decisions. Instead, perfusionists work with a person's medical team to determine the best equipment for them, then ensure that the equipment works optimally.
