Before and during the weld, proper weld inspection consists of keeping workers safe and ensuring regulatory compliance. After the weld is complete, weld inspection keeps civilians protected by making sure no product with a faulty weld enters public use.
Visual inspections are the easiest, quickest, and least expensive type of weld inspection, and they are widely used. In a visual weld inspection, welding technicians will look for any noticeable discontinuities like burn-through or cracks.
The Welding Inspector will be responsible for ensuring that all welding activities are performed in ance with industry standards and specifications.
The WeldEye® Welding Management System can identify all welds in any structure, when a weld was performed, by whom and with which WPS, material ID it was produced. The application provides full traceability of all welds and all activities on these welds during the whole production process.
Integrity is by far the most important must-have quality of a welding inspector. The definition of integrity is 'the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles'.
What Is a Welding Inspector? Welding inspectors are responsible for ensuring that safety codes are followed during construction projects that involve welding. They inspect the welding work to make sure that it follows federal, local and state guidelines and also review work plans prior to construction.
Certified Welding Inspectors (CWIs) determine if a weldment meets the acceptance criteria of a specific code, standard, or other specification; handle qualification records; oversee non-destructive testing; and ensure proper materials are available during testing.
Welding Inspectors employ their extensive knowledge of welding processes, test methods, discontinuities, materials, qualifications, and standards to ensure that weldments and welding-related activities comply with all applicable quality and safety criteria.
While there is no minimum educational requirement for a career as a certified welding inspector, a high school diploma, or a higher degree is encouraged. The less education an individual has under their belt, the more work experience they are expected to have attained.
The role of a welding inspector is to inspect the joint preparation (edge preparation), check the weld at different stages (root pass and other stages), do the final weld inspection using Penetrant Testing, Magnetic Particle Testing, Radiography and Ultrasonic Testing as specified.
