A severely worn out CV joint can even disintegrate while you're driving and make the car undrivable. You may lose control of the vehicle entirely. It is not safe to drive with a damaged CV joint. Look for some symptoms of a failing CV joint to have it repaired before it becomes unsafe to operate the vehicle.
When your CV joints failure, it essentially breaks your vehicle's axle, as your car will not be going anywhere. If this occurs while you are driving, the consequences can be even more severe, often leading to complete loss of control. Broken CV joints are not repairable. (However, the boot is.)
Combined with the lack of lubrication from not enough grease, the joint will eventually tear itself apart. If your axles are failing, you'll still technically be able to drive your car. ... Once broken completely, your car won't move, and if they break while you're driving, it could cause a serious accident.
What happens when a CV joint goes bad? If a CV joint begins to fail while driving, your car will start to pull to one side as one wheel loses power. When the joint breaks completely its corresponding wheel will no longer turn and although the engine may still run, the car won't move.
At low speed, a bad CV joint may make a steady knocking sound every couple of seconds or so. A bad CV joint can also cause a vibration that is felt in the steering wheel and floorboard of the vehicle - this may happen only at certain speeds.
It is possible to drive a car with a torn CV boot, but doing so will likely lead to further damage that will eventually require more extensive repair. ... Among the indications that a CV joint or axle has been damaged is a clicking or popping noise when turning, or vibrations at highway speeds.
Over time, with exposure to the elements a CV boot can become dry or brittle and crack or tear. When a CV boot cracks or tears it will usually leak grease onto the inside of the wheel. ... A torn boot can also allow dirt, debris, and moisture to enter the CV joint, which will damage the joint.
If the boot that seals the CV joint is damaged, the grease will leak out and contamination will set in, eventually causing the joint to wear out and fail. ... It is not safe to drive with a damaged CV joint. Look for some symptoms of a failing CV joint to have it repaired before it becomes unsafe to operate the vehicle.
As long as that boot remains intact, it is not uncommon for CV joints to last well over 100,000 miles or more. If the boot becomes ripped or torn, the grease contained within will get slung out from the joint while road grit, debris, and water will be allowed in which further accelerates the wear and tear on the joint.
If no noise is present and only the CV boot is broken, you can replace just the CV boot. Tip: Before you install a new axle, check the CV joints (even when the boot is broken) and see if they are worth saving. If you need to replace the CV axle completely, the new CV axle will come with the boots already installed.
