When writers insert or alter words in a direct quotation, square brackets[ ]are placed around the change. The brackets, always used in pairs, enclose words intended to clarify meaning, provide a brief explanation, or to help integrate the quote into the writer's sentence.
Sometimes you will need to leave words out in the middle of your quotation, because they are not relevant to the point you are making. To indicate that you have left words out, use ellipsis points, which are simply three dots: . . .
Use ellipses to make a quote say something other than what the author originally intended. Include the sentence's ending punctuation followed by the ellipsis points when the dots are inserted after a complete sentence. Leave out the spaces before and after the ellipsis points or between them.
It is used to indicate that something incorrectly written is intentionally being left as it was in the original. Sic is usually italicized and always surrounded by brackets to indicate that it was not part of the original. Place [sic] right after the error. Example: She wrote, They made there [sic] beds.
Make note of which word is spelled incorrectly. Place the word "sic" after the misspelled word. If there are multiple misspelled words within one quote, place "sic" at the end of the phrase but within the quotation marks. Italicize the word "sic," but do not italicize the rest of the quote or the misspelled word.
Square brackets are used around words that are added that are not part of the original quote. For instance, you might have a source that says "Brenda and David went to the store," but you only want the quote to refer to David as a pronoun in your quote. So you should change it to "[He] went to the store."

If you're using MLA style, you'll need to indicate modifications to the source text by placing square brackets around any changes made. For example: Original quotation: "Reading is also a process and it also changes you."
No. As the MLA Handbook advises, Unless indicated in square brackets or parentheses, changes must not be made in the spelling, capitalization, or interior punctuation of the source (75).
