They are not allowed to touch the bottom of the pool and must tread water the entire time – although players use a movement called the egg-beater which is more efficient than the normal action of treading water. Players can move the ball by throwing it to a teammate or swimming while pushing the ball in front of them.
Most regulation water polo pools are at least 6 feet deep. However, in the case of a pool having a shallow end, players are still prohibited from touching the bottom of the pool. Doing so will result in the ball being turned over to the opposing team.
But what makes water polo so difficult is the amount of endurance, speed, and strength required to sprint down a 25 to 30 (women vs men) meter pool, guard and wrestle your opponent without touching the bottom, and not having true stoppage time besides 3 timeouts.
Water polo requires strong swimming skills, mostly freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke. While having great turns, starts and streamlines isn't required having speed, power and endurance is.
