Questions & answers

Generally speaking, learning to get up and ride is easier with windsurfing, and most beginners will experience the thrill of windsurfing on their first lesson. This is almost entirely due to the fact that the equipment is more user friendly, taking less instruction and time to grasp.
Competition from Kites and SUPs Other watersports have come in and taken over many of the young riders that might have been windsurfers in the past. Kitesurfing seems to be the main culprit. It just looks so much more extreme and cool from the observer when you're doing massive jumps, spins, and loops.
Windsurfing is far easier to learn and takes only some solid instructions and about two to three hours with flat water and about four to five hours in waves. This is more than enough for anyone to start sailing back and forth on their own.
As long as you have some kind of fitness and your balance is ok, the short answer to 'is windsurfing hard', is no. If you plan to have a lesson with a good instructor you will be able to stand up, windsurf, turn around and come back within the first 2 hours of your lesson.
In terns of fitness required, surfing is more challenging than both watersports. In the initial stages windsurfing may seem exhausting but after a few attempts we start to get the hang of using the wind to our advantage, we stop fighting the wind and start to substitute physical effort with applied technique.
It's not 100% fair to say that windsurfing died, but from its meteoric rise from obscurity to everybody's-doing-it popularity across the country, it has now largely gone extinct save for a few favored locations—and even there, kiteboarding is probably eroding windsurfer numbers even further.
