To redact, or black out, private text in your document, you first need to mark the text to be redacted. To do this, highlight the desired text and click the Mark button.
Microsoft created the Complex redaction tool for Word 2007 and Word 2010, but Microsoft no longer supports this program. You highlight the words you want to redact and click the Mark button. You can do a search for a specific word(s) in order to mark them all for redaction.
Redaction is a form of editing in which multiple sources of texts are combined (redacted) and altered slightly to make a single document. For example, originally classified documents released under freedom of information legislation may have sensitive information redacted in this way.
Use the paper document method to redact a scanned file. Print out the paper document. Cut out the text that needs to be redacted. Use opaque tape or paper to cover the redacted sections. Scan the document and save it as a PDF.
Open your Word document that you want to redact. Bring up the backstage view by clicking File. Go to Info, then Check for Issues and click Inspect Document. On the Document Inspector dialog that appears, select (check) the options available on the list that you wish to inspect.
