Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
Along with homeowners working on their own homes, only licensed plumbers and electricians are legally allowed to do plumbing or electrical work in Oregon.
A homeowner may not do electrical work on a dwelling that is now or will be for sale, lease, rent or exchange within six months of final approval. If you do not own and live in the dwelling, a State of Oregon licensed electrical contractor must do the work.
Some forms of electrical work fall outside any state or local regulation. In general, homeowners can perform only the most basic repairs on their own, without any form of license or permit. This includes tasks such as replacing a light switch, outlet cover or lighting fixture.

Outlets and Switches. Electrical outlet replacement is a job that some homeowners may not feel comfortable doing themselves. The fact is, though outlet or switch replacement is a relatively straightforward job, dealing with your home's electrical wiring is intimidating for a reason.
As a homeowner you can do all the work yourself without licensed trades. ... Many plumbing items don't require you to be licensed for your own home. Some municipalities will require if it is in a condo, a rental or if you are tiring into the towns main drain. Other than that knock yourself out.
When do I need an electrical permit? Simple electrical work such as replacing a bad outlet, installing a fixture, or replacing a fan does not require a permit. It is the for those bigger jobs, the kind that most of us would be afraid to do for fear of getting electrocuted, a permit and inspector are required.
Permits and Inspections Are Required For Most Electrical Work. ... Electrical work is different from most all other types of home services. Many electrical jobs require a permit and according to state law, the work must be inspected before the job is finished.
Homeowners may only pull permits themselves if they are performing the work alone or with friends and relatives who are unpaid. For other projects, paying a contractor to pull a permit can save time and money.
