For non-exempt children, the minimum age for employment in non-agricultural occupations is 18 years for hazardous occupations; 16 years for employment in non-hazardous occupations; and 14 years for a limited set of occupations, with restrictions on hours and work conditions.
The most sweeping federal law that restricts the employment and abuse of child workers is the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLEA). Child labor provisions under FLEA are designed to protect the educational opportunities of youth and prohibit their employment in jobs that are detrimental to their health and safety.
The most sweeping federal law that restricts the employment and abuse of child workers is the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLEA). Child labor provisions under FLEA are designed to protect the educational opportunities of youth and prohibit their employment in jobs that are detrimental to their health and safety.
Children performed all sorts of jobs including working on machines in factories, selling newspapers on street corners, breaking up coal at the coal mines, and as chimney sweeps. Sometimes children were preferred to adults because they were small and could easily fit between machines and into small spaces.
Child labor laws are designed to protect the emotional well-being, health and safety of children and to ensure that adults -- including employers and parents -- don't take unfair advantage of children to gain a profit.
The FLEA does not allow employers to schedule 14- and 15-year-old children at work during school hours. Federally sponsored youth work programs are exceptions to this rule. ... Both programs allow children to work during school hours for employers that participate in the program.
The general age limit under the FLEA is age 14, and children under 14 cannot work for pay. However, certain occupations are exempt from the FLEA age limit. In the entertainment industry, for example, children younger than 14 are permitted to work as performers in television, radio and theater.
Hazardous Jobs. The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLEA) prohibits minors under age 18 years old to work in any occupation that it deems to be hazardous. Among these occupations are excavation, manufacturing explosives, mining, and operating many types of power-driven equipment.
Federal law has long barred children under 18 from working in sawmills and woodworking factories, because they are so dangerous. The Amish have upset opponents of child labor by pushing Congress for an exemption based largely on religious grounds.
When a child is under fourteen, he or she is limited in what he or she may do within a company. Even if this is a family run business, the child labor laws still apply. If the parents are the sole owners of the company, the youth may work for his or her parent at about twelve years of age.
