For pdfFiller’s FAQs

Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
If this is the smallest line a person can read, the person's acuity is “6/12” (“20/40”), meaning that this person needs to approach to a distance of 6 meters (20 ft) to read letters that a person with normal acuity could read at 12 meters (39 ft).
A 3 to 4-year-old should be able to read the 20/40 line, and a 5-year-old the 20/30 line. Older children and adults should be able to read the majority of letters on the 20/20 line. If you notice any results that fall outside these standards, be sure to schedule an eye exam with your Vision Source doctor.
To interpret your reading, think of the numbers in feet. For instance, someone with 20/60 vision can read at 20 feet away what a person with normal vision could read at 60 feet away. Modern optometry exam rooms are equipped with electronic eye reading charts, making it easier to produce accurate readings.
The bottom number indicates the distance at which a person with normal eyesight can read the same line. As an example, if the fifth row on the Snellen chart were the smallest row you could read, you would have 20/40 vision.
Using a Snellen Eye Chart So if, at 20 feet, you can read the letters on the row marked 40, this means you have visual acuity of 20/40 or better: 1/2 normal. From 10 feet, if the smallest letters you could read were on the 40 line, this would give you an acuity of 10/40: 1/4 normal.
A person with 20/40 vision sees things at 20 feet that most people who don't need vision correction can see at 40 feet. This means that they are nearsighted, but only slightly. A person with 20/40 vision may or may not need eyeglasses or contacts, and can discuss his or her options with a doctor.
If this is the smallest line a person can read, the person's acuity is “6/12” (“20/40”), meaning that this person needs to approach to a distance of 6 meters (20 ft) to read letters that a person with normal acuity could read at 12 meters (39 ft).
20/40 vision means that the test subject sees at 20 feet what a person with normal vision sees at 40 feet. Another way of saying this is that a person with 20/40 vision has vision that is only half as good as normal — or, objects must be at half the normal distance for him to see them.
