Questions & answers

When attending a visitation, friends and family will come and go during the prescribed calling hours as they choose. Attendees include people who knew or admired the deceased and people who did not know the person who died but who know one or more of the mourners.
If the event is limited to family only, you should respect the family's wishes and not attend. If you are invited to a wake, viewing, or visitation and would like to attend but for whatever reason you cannot attend, you can simply attend the funeral service.
The visitation takes place before the funeral, often the afternoon or evening before. The family invites people to drop by within a certain period to offer support and condolences. It's less formal than a funeral so it gives people a chance to chat. They might share fond memories and anecdotes of the deceased.
Here are a few examples of comments to avoid: “I know exactly how you feel.” “God never gives us more than we can handle. God must have needed another angel in heaven. This is God's plan.” “Just try to be strong.” Or anything starting with the words “at least,” such as, “At least you have your other children with you.
Home visits meet families where they are—figuratively and literally—with the goal of creating trust and ultimately improving educational outcomes. Engaging with families outside of school helps form a shared understanding and shows that teachers care about their students.
The visitation is a time specifically set aside for friends, relatives, neighbors, and coworkers to come pay their respects to the person who has died and to offer condolences and support to the grieving family. While it is common for the body to be present at a visitation, it doesn't have to be.
