Established in 1978, NYC Parks GreenThumb is proud to be the nation's largest urban gardening program, sustaining over 550 community gardens and supporting thousands of volunteer gardeners throughout New York City.
We always suggest taking a walk around your neighborhood to see the gardens in person. Visit during open hours, talk to the members present, and reach out directly to the gardens with the contact information on the map to learn more about getting involved. which gardens are in your neighborhood!
GreenThumb. GreenThumb is the program administered by the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation which provides resources and coordinates leases for city-owned vacant land. Originally called "Operation GreenThumb," it was formed in 1978 and was originally sponsored by the City Department of General Services.
A community garden is a shared, semi-public space where people in the surrounding neighborhood share the work and harvest of maintaining a garden space for growing fruits, vegetables, flowers, or even livestock. The way a community garden is set up and maintained can vary greatly from one to the next.
There are currently more than 550 community gardens in New York City. If you cannot find an existing garden to join in your neighborhood, the GreenThumb program has prepared a guide with step-by-step instructions about creating a new community garden.
Benefits. In addition to beautifying city blocks and providing needed green space in areas where public parks are scarce, community gardeners grow nutritious fresh foods for families, communities, and emergency food sites.
