The meaning of the stamp. A recent project in my office required the services of a structural engineer to design a small metal frame indoors on an interior remodel. ... An architect's or engineer's professional stamp says that the architect or engineer vouches for the accuracy and appropriateness of the documents.
It means you are taking legal responsibility that the document you are sealing is correct and engineered to the current standards, and that you have done the design yourself or directly supervised it. By placing a seal on a document you are also signifying that you are competent in the items on the plans/report.
A PE Stamp carries the weight of a professional engineer's approval. Along with that, the engineer is stating that he or she will be responsible for the integrity of the system. ... By placing your trust in a PE, they become responsible for your project's integrity.
What is a PE license? A Professional Engineering license is a certification that demonstrates an engineer's adherence to a higher level of standards. Prior to 1907, proof of skill and proficiency was not required for individuals to work as engineers, thus putting public welfare, health, and safety at risk.
Graduate from an ABET-accredited engineering program. Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Work as an engineer for four years. Pass the Professional Engineering (PE) exam (you cannot take the PE exam without first passing the FE exam).
Steps to becoming a P.E. Each state licensing board has varying educational requirements. Licensure candidates typically must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam.
Affixing the seal on documents and drawings indicates they are final for the intended purpose and have been prepared by or under the supervision of a person licensed to practise professional engineering who is assuming responsibility for them.
What you're getting at is some kind of industry certification, like the PE, that would only allow those who qualify to call themselves engineers. But software engineering doesn't have that. Therefore, anyone can call themselves an engineer if they want to, and don't have to pass your little criteria here.
Instances where architects are required by law. Through their professional designations, they are granted the ability (and responsibility) to sign off (or stamp) on building design plans. Generally speaking, an engineer can stamp the architectural design component for smaller structures, usually single-story.
(Definition: "stamped" means plans prepared by an Alaska licensed architect or engineer.) Section 106 of the Building Code requires plans to be prepared and designed by an engineer or architect licensed by the State to practice as such in the specific discipline.
