Using "Dear Sir." Many cover letter readers are women. If you cannot get the name and title of someone to write to, it's safer to use either a job title or generic title like "Dear Human Resources Manager," or "Dear Sir/Ma'am."
Try not to use numbers in your cover letter titles, unless you're referring to the date. No employer needs to know how many files you have with "cover letter" in the name, or which draft number the letter they're getting sent is. Cover letter titles don't need to be unique, but uniform, instead.
Too often, people's résumés and cover letters are given the generic name "résumé.doc" or "coverletter.doc." Step it up a notch and personalize the files by adding your name and renaming them to "JaneSmithRésumé" and "JaneSmithCoverLetter.doc." Remember, the hiring manager receives many submissions.
To address a cover letter without a name, use some variation of, "Dear Software Team Hiring Manager." You can also use, "Dear Hiring Manager" if the addressee really is unknown. Remember that "To Whom It May Concern" is an old-fashioned salutation for cover letters.
