Open (or start) a conversation with the contact you'd like to edit. Tap the three dots in the upper right corner. Tap “People & options” Tap “Chat message sound” and select the sound you'd like.
Go to the People app (also may be labelled Contacts) and select a contact. In contact details, hit the Menu button (three vertical dots in the top-right corner) and choose Edit (this step may be unnecessary on your phone) Scroll down until you see Ringtone. Tap it and select a tone to play when they call.
Tap the Conversation you wish to set a custom notification for. Tap the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner of the screen. Tap Details. Tap Notifications. Tap Sound. Tap your desired tone.

In contact details, hit the Menu button (three vertical dots in the top-right corner) and choose Edit (this step may be unnecessary on your phone) Scroll down until you see Ringtone. Tap it and select a tone to play when they call.
Tap on Settings and then tap on Sounds Tap on Text Tone and select from the list, you will find custom text tones appearing under Ringtones whereas defaults will appear under Original section. Select a text tone you want to use and close out of Settings.
On the iPhone home screen, tap the Settings app. Tap Sounds & Haptics (or Sounds on some older versions). Tap Text Tone. Swipe to browse the list of text tones (you can use ringtones as text tones. They're on this screen, too).
Tap on Phone and then the Contacts tab on the bottom* Locate the contact to set a custom SMS / message tone for and tap on their name. Tap on Edit and tap on Text Tone Just as above, tap on a new text tone to set it as the default for the selected contact.
Select the contact whose text tone you want to change. Tap Edit. Tap Text Tone. Choose a text tone. When you find a text tone you want, tap the tone to place a checkmark next to it, then tap Done (in some versions of iOS, this button is labeled Save).
