hey everyone Steve from backun Gallery here and this time around I want to share some hints and tricks for using Nikon's Auto AFI tune feature as of this video this feature is found in the D5 d500 and d7500 but I'm confident that it will become a staple in the mid-range and higher-end Nikon bodies note that if you have an older camera Auto AFI tune is not going to be an option only standard AFI tune which we're not discussing this time around this video is just for auto afine tune also this video is going to be the Abridged version of what you'll find in my ebook secrets to the Nikon autofocus system so for a lot more information be sure to check out that book at my site so let's go ahead and just jump right in why use afin tune at all okay before we get tooo deep into the actual how-tos of this video I want to very briefly talk about why we might want to fine-tune SL calibrate our lenses in the first place the reason we calibrate is to overcome the tendency of a camera and lens combination to front or back focus the thing is your camera was put together at one Factory and built to a certain set of specifications and those specifications have a certain set of tolerances built into them the lens was assembled at a different plant and has its own set of specifications and tolerances of course prior to your purchase those two pieces of gear have never met before in most cases everything works well and the camera and lens Focus properly or you know at least close enough for it not to matter however other times we may notice that the combination has a tendency for front Focus or for back focus and in those cases we want to dial in an adjustment that will compensate for that 10 pendency now that's what afine tune does and auto afine tune does it automatically well sort of as a side note if calibration is necessary this doesn't mean there's something wrong with the lens or the camera this just means that the tolerance is lined up in such a way with your particular lens and your particular camera that an adjustment is necessary you know that's why this option is available to us in the first place so don't feel bad if you have to use it that's what it's there for zoom in telecon converters first telecon converters if you have a lens you use with a telecon converter you need to calibrate the lens and then do a separate calibration for the lens and teleconverter combo the camera treats the lens plus teleconverter combo as its own lens and will often have a different AFI tune value than just a straight lens now for zooms one of the deficiencies with Nikon's AFI in tune system is the lack of full support for zoom lenses Nikon only allows a single value for each lens however sometimes if you test a zoom lens you'll discover that they need a different afine tune value for the long end and for the short end so you have to make some choices and none of them are going to be perfect if you find the values are within five points on the long end and the...
