How does a license server work?

A software license server is a centralized computer software system which provides access tokens, or keys, to client computers in order to enable licensed software to run on them. The server component of a client server application may also contain an internal license server.

How does server licensing work?

Core-based licensing requires all physical cores in the server to be licensed. Servers are licensed based on the number of processor cores in the physical server. A minimum of 8 core licenses is required for each physical processor and a minimum of 16 core licenses is required for each server.

How does Windows Server licensing work?

How does Server 2019 licensing work?

1) Each server requires a minimum of a single Base License, which covers 16 cores. 2019 Datacenter permits unlimited VMs and Hyper-V containers when all physical cores in the server are licensed, so no Additional Licenses are required for VMs for Windows Server 2019 Datacenter.

Do I need CAL's for each virtual server?

To answer your specific questions: The 25 CAL's apply to all of your physical and virtual machines if you use them in per-user or per-device mode, but you would need 100 licenses if you operated each virtual machine in per-server mode.

How does SQL Server licensing work?

With SQL Server, you can: License individual virtual machines (VM), and when licensing per core, buy core licenses only for the virtual cores assigned to the VM. VM license mobility is a Software Assurance benefit. Without Software Assurance, licenses can be moved from one server to another only once every 90 days.
