No, your employer does not have to give you a reason. But in most cases, if you're fired your employer must give you a written notice of termination. And in some cases, they can fire you without giving you notice.
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLEA) has no requirements that a company must give notice to an employee prior to termination or layoff. However, if an employee is terminated while under contract and is a part of a union or collective bargaining agreement, employers are required to give notice of termination.
There are no official laws that require employers to verify employment on former employees. However, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission stipulates that it's illegal to refuse to provide information based on race, sex, color and other non-job-related factors.
Termination for cause is serious business. Termination for cause occurs when an employee's actions in the workplace, interactions with their coworkers, interaction with their manager, or ways in which they treat a customer or vendor are so egregious that they require employment termination sometimes immediately.
