Is it OK to touch a vinyl record?
Never touch the record's playing surface with your bare hands or fingers as your body oil will transfer onto the record attracting even more dust thereby affecting sound quality. If you accidentally touch a record, it is best to immediately clean it with a liquid record cleaner before putting it back in its sleeve.
Does play vinyl damage it?
As for wear-induced noise, most of that comes from playing records with a worn-out or damaged stylus (aka needle) that's literally gouging the grooves with each play. Any decent cartridge will play records without damaging the groove. A force setting that's too high or too low can accelerate record wear and noise.
Do vinyl records last forever?
Each time a record is played it is slowly being destroyed. I think an unplaced, well protected vinyl record will last pretty much forever. The vinyl itself is pretty stable. But friction, whether from dust or a record needle is pretty brutal.
Does vinyl sound better?
Vinyl Sounds Better Vinyl sounds better than MP3s ever could. Most of the music is broadcast in some lossy format, where details are missed, and the overall quality is reduced. It happens because audio files get compressed to make them small enough to store thousands of them on the phone, and to stream online.
What is the proper way to hold a vinyl?
To hold a record, place the thumb on the edge of the disc, and the rest of the fingers of the same hand on the center label for balance. Use both hands on the edge to place disc on turntable. Do not use paper or cardboard inner sleeves and do not store records without inner sleeves. Use soft polyethylene inner sleeves.
How should vinyl be stored flat or upright?
Vinyl records need to be stored in an upright position to ensure they stay in good condition. Records that have been stored at a slant for an extended period of time can warp because of the uneven pressure that has been placed on them. This is why records are often kept in crates that position them upright.
How do you properly put on a record?
Put the platter into motion. Control setups will vary between turntables. Lift or cue the tonearm. Position the tonearm above the beginning of the record. Lower the stylus onto the record. Put the tonearm back into place when the record is over.
Is it bad to scratch a record?
They don't ruin them. The act of merely playing a record will wear it down over time. That said, attempting to scratch with just any needle will hurt the record. DJs use specialty needles that have more rounded tips so that they don't damage the record as much.
