You will need to make a DMV appointment for the written test. We recommend that you wait until you have your certificate in hand before making an appointment to avoid rescheduling. Tests are not given after 4:30pm. Make a DMV appointment by phone: 1-800-777-0133 or online (select the office visit appointment option).
Most states will allow you to just walk in and take your permit test without an appointment. You will need to check with your state DMV or licensing bureau on specific requirements for what kind of identification you need to bring.
Do I Need to Make an Appointment to Take the Permit Test? While it's typically not required, many states allow you to make an appointment, which can eliminate long waiting times and speed up the process. In many cases, you can make an appointment online. Check with your local DMV office.
Make a Behind-the-Wheel Drive Test appointment (drive tests are not given without an appointment.) To make an appointment, call 1-800-777-0133 between the hours of 8am and 5pm Monday-Friday. Or you can make a DMV appointment online.
In California, you must be at least 15 12 to get your permit. Once you've reached that age, and you're ready to take your California permit test, schedule an appointment at the DMV. Appointments are required unless you visit a Driver License Processing Center to apply for your permit.

You will probably take the permit test at the DMV. In a few states like Florida, can also take the test online. However, most states still require you to take the test in person. The New York DMV test can be taken by anyone 16 years of age or older, as part of the process to get your learner's permit. There is no additional fee if you need to retake the DMV test. You may want to make a reservation online to take your NYS permit test in one of the counties associated with a larger metro area.
